Visual identity

Visual identity is the set of elements through which a brand presents itself externally – the logo and the rules for its use, the colour palette, typography, image and illustration style, use of space, and graphic elements. The point is not aesthetics for its own sake but recognisability: a customer should be able to identify the company even when the logo is not visible. A practical component is a style guide that sets minimum sizes, clear space, permitted and prohibited variants, and use on different backgrounds, plus ready-made templates for common outputs. Without a style guide, the identity falls apart the moment several people or external suppliers start working on materials. When creating it, it is worth thinking from the outset about the digital environment, including small formats and dark mode.
