Interreg

Interreg is the collective name for European territorial cooperation programmes financed from the ERDF, which support joint projects between regions from different member states. In the 2021–2027 period, Slovakia participates in cross-border programmes with all its neighbours – Interreg Slovakia–Czechia, Slovakia–Austria, Poland–Slovakia, Hungary–Slovakia and the programme with Ukraine – as well as in the transnational programmes Danube Region and Central Europe. The basic condition is partnership: the project must be jointly prepared and implemented by at least two partners from two countries, with one acting as the lead partner responsible for the whole project. Interreg finances nature protection and climate measures, cultural heritage and tourism, cross-border education, cooperation between institutions, and small projects through a small project fund. Typical recipients are local authorities, schools, non-profit organisations and regional agencies. A specific feature is the reimbursement system following certification of expenditure by a national controller, which requires partners to have a sufficient financial reserve.
