Choosing a podcast guest determines both the value of the episode and its reach. Three things matter in the decision: whether the guest has something to say on a topic that interests the target audience, whether they can speak clearly, and whether they will also bring their own listeners when they share the episode. Guests with practical experience they have not described elsewhere work best, not well-known names with no connection to the topic. Preparation means going through what the guest has already said elsewhere so the episode does not repeat it, and sending them broad areas of discussion rather than exact questions – those would needlessly constrain the answers. It is also necessary to agree whether the episode will be approved before publication, to avoid any misunderstanding after recording.
