DNS is the system that translates a domain name into the address of the server where the website actually runs. A company encounters it mainly when moving hosting, launching a new website, or changing email provider. The key records are those that determine where the website points, and the records for email communication, which are often forgotten when moving – the result is a working website and non-functioning company email. Changes do not take effect immediately but with a delay determined by the configured time-to-live of the records, which is therefore worth lowering ahead of a planned move. Access to DNS management should belong to the company, not solely to the website supplier, otherwise, when the cooperation ends, the company can find itself unable to manage its own domain.
