A deepfake is synthetic image or video content created using AI that realistically mimics the face, voice, or speech of a specific, real-life person—often without that person’s knowledge or consent. This technology poses significant ethical and security risks related to misinformation, fraud, and reputational damage, which is why an increasing number of countries are seeking to regulate deepfake content or, at the very least, require it to be labeled.
