The Slovak Arts Council is a public-law institution that provides grants and scholarships in the field of art, culture and the creative industries. It supports theatre, music, literature, visual arts, cross-disciplinary projects, traditional culture, as well as the activities of libraries, galleries and museums and the renewal of cultural infrastructure. Applicants may be organisations as well as natural persons, including artists themselves, which is an exception compared with most grant schemes. Calls are issued in a structure of sub-programmes with their own deadlines throughout the year, and applications are submitted electronically. They are evaluated by expert panels made up of people from the field. For cultural organisations, together with local government grants, this is the main source of funding for ongoing activity. Co-financing and proper settlement of previous support are usually required, and this is monitored closely for repeat applicants.
