Aid intensity is the percentage share of a project's eligible expenditure that can be covered from public sources, including EU funds. Its maximum level is determined by the state aid rules, the specific scheme and, for regional investment aid, the regional aid map approved by the European Commission. For the 2022–2027 period, a basic intensity of 30 to 50% applies in Slovakia depending on the region – the highest is in the eastern and central Slovak districts, the lowest around Bratislava, with the Bratislava region itself largely excluded from regional aid. The basic rate increases by 10 percentage points for medium-sized enterprises and by 20 points for small enterprises, so a small company in eastern Slovakia can reach support of up to 70%. For other categories of aid, for example for research, education or environmental protection, separate intensities apply under the GBER regulation. The applicant must cover the rest of the budget from own or loan resources without any public support.
