Brand promise

A brand promise is the expectation a company creates in the customer through its communication – speed, quality, availability, access, price. It only becomes a genuine brand once this expectation is repeatedly fulfilled. The greatest damage doesn't come from a company promising too little, but from promising more than it can deliver: the advertising claims an instant response, while an enquiry waits three days. A gap between the promise and the experience causes stronger disappointment than a lower expectation from the outset. A practical measure is to align marketing with operations – verify whether the company can actually deliver what it communicates, and if not, change either the promise or the operations. It's precisely this alignment that distinguishes a brand from an advertising campaign.
