The llms.txt file is a proposed format through which a website offers language models a concise overview of its most important content and links to its plain-text form. The idea is to spare the model from crawling complex pages and to direct it to what matters – the company description, services, price list, documentation, frequently asked questions. It is important to know that this is not a binding standard that model operators would have to respect, and its benefit has not yet been proven. Deployment, however, is cheap and risk-free, so it can be recommended as a supplement, not a replacement for a well-structured website. The basis of visibility in generative tools remains clear, up-to-date and citable content that is accessible without obstacles. If a company decides to use it, it should keep it up to date just like a sitemap, otherwise it will direct models to content that no longer exists.
