Main and supporting project activities

Main project activities are activities that directly fulfil the project's objective and produce measurable indicators – for example construction works, procurement of technology, training of the target group, or research activity. Supporting activities are activities that do not fulfil the objective on their own, but without which the project cannot be carried out: project management, administration, public procurement, accounting, publicity and information. This division is not a formality – the call usually sets a limit on what percentage of the budget supporting activities may make up, or covers them with a flat-rate amount without the need to document individual items of expenditure. Every item of expenditure in the budget must be assigned to a specific activity, and every activity must have its own time period in the schedule. Misclassifying an item of expenditure, for example placing the project manager's salary among the main activities, is among the most common objections raised both during evaluation and during the check of the payment request.
