Backlink profile

A backlink profile is the summary of all the links pointing to your website from other websites, together with their characteristics. It is assessed as a whole, not link by link. More important than the total number of links is the number of referring domains, since a hundred links from one website carry less weight than ten links from ten different ones. Further factors tracked are the topical closeness of the sources, their own trustworthiness, the distribution of anchor texts, the ratio of tagged to untagged links, and whether the profile grows smoothly or in sudden jumps. A sharp increase out of nowhere looks just as unnatural as a profile where half the links have identical anchor text matching an exact keyword. When analysing, compare your profile with competitors in the same industry, not with absolute numbers – that shows the real gap and what needs to be caught up.
