Grants for healthcare support the modernisation of facilities and improved access to care. Besides large hospital projects, this also covers support for primary care – equipping general practitioners' and paediatricians' surgeries, building integrated healthcare centres, accessibility, digitalisation and connection to electronic health records. Long-term care, palliative and home nursing care, and prevention are also supported. Besides healthcare facilities, applicants also include municipalities building premises for doctors, which is a common route to addressing the shortage of doctors in regions. For equipment, the assessment covers usage, staffing and the sustainability of operation, so the mere purchase of a device without a doctor and without a plan for its use will not succeed. Equally, it is assessed whether the project will improve access to care for residents of the catchment area, not merely the comfort of the facility itself.
