A sports infrastructure project includes the construction and renovation of playgrounds, gymnasiums, athletics tracks, swimming pools, workout areas, and multifunctional surfaces. The sources of funding are the Fund for the Promotion of Sport, local authority budgets, and in some cases also European programmes where linked to schools or the renewal of public space. The applicant is usually a village, a town, a region, a school, or a sports club. In the assessment, besides technical readiness, use is also evaluated – that is, how many hours a week the facility will be in operation, and whether it will be accessible to the public and to schools, not just to a single club. A critical part is the sustainability of operation: energy, maintenance of the turf or surface, and staff make up the annual costs, which the founding body must bear from its own budget throughout the entire sustainability period.
