The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is the largest structural fund of the European Union, whose aim is to reduce disparities between regions and strengthen economic cohesion. The ERDF finances mainly investments in research and innovation, digitalisation, the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises, energy efficiency, renewable sources, transport infrastructure and the regeneration of territories. In Slovakia, ERDF funds are drawn down mainly through the Slovakia Programme 2021–2027 and the Interreg cross-border cooperation programmes. Support from the ERDF takes the form of non-repayable financial contributions, but also financial instruments such as preferential loans and guarantees. The intensity of aid depends on the category of the region – less developed regions, which cover most of Slovakia, can receive a higher rate of support than the more developed Bratislava Region.
