AI Search is a new generation of information retrieval in which the user asks questions in natural language and the system, instead of a list of links, returns a synthesised answer compiled from multiple sources, usually with citations and the option of follow-up questions. The category was defined by tools such as Perplexity, search in ChatGPT, Gemini connected to the Google index, and AI Overviews directly in Google results; the common denominator is the combination of a language model with a current web index. For users this means faster answers and conversational exploration of topics; for content creators it means a fundamental shift: the number of click-throughs for informational queries is falling, and attention is competed for within the answer itself – being a cited source is becoming just as important as position in the classic SERP. Purchase decisions are also moving into conversations, where AI compares solutions and makes direct recommendations. Companies respond to this with a GEO strategy, monitoring of AI Brand Visibility, and creating content that AI systems can easily understand, verify and cite.
