The Justice Programme funds activities aimed at the functioning of justice in the European Union – judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, training for judges, prosecutors, lawyers and other legal professions, improving access to justice, and supporting the rights of victims of crime. Applicants are typically courts and judicial institutions, professional chambers, universities, research bodies, and non-governmental organisations working in this field. Most calls require an international partnership and are submitted centrally in English. For the business environment, the programme has indirect significance, since it produces methodologies, training materials, and tools that are later applied in practice, for example in cross-border debt recovery and dispute resolution. The outputs of supported projects tend to be publicly available, so they can be used even without direct participation.
