Viewer retention

Viewer retention is the share of people still watching a video at each second of its duration. It is displayed as a curve and is the most useful metric for video, because it shows not just how many but where. A sharp drop in the first few seconds means the opening failed to deliver on the promise of the title or thumbnail. A gradual, smooth decline is normal. A sudden dip in the middle marks a specific spot – a long introduction, a tangent, a technical passage. A rise, conversely, shows a moment that people rewind or share. Read the curve for every video and use it to adjust the editing of the next ones: shorten introductions, move the strongest content forward, and cut passages where the curve repeatedly drops. For shorter formats, also track the share of viewers who watched the video through to the end – it is the strongest signal for further distribution.
