Typography and readability

Typography and readability determine whether a visitor even starts reading the text at all. Four parameters are decisive: sufficient font size for body text, adequate line spacing, a limited line length, and sufficient contrast against the background. Lines that are too long force the eye to hunt for the start of the next one, small type leads to zooming in on mobile, and light grey text on a white background is unreadable for some users. Readability also includes structuring – short paragraphs, subheadings, highlighting of key data, and lists wherever an enumeration is involved. For corporate websites, it is worth setting these parameters once in a design system, so they do not have to be dealt with for every new page and so the text looks the same across the whole website.
