Cohesion Fund

The Cohesion Fund is an instrument of the European Union's cohesion policy intended for member states whose gross national income per capita does not reach 90% of the EU average – Slovakia is among them. The fund primarily finances large projects in TEN-T transport infrastructure, such as motorways, railways and public passenger transport, and environmental projects including water mains, sewerage, wastewater treatment plants, waste management and adaptation to climate change. In the 2021–2027 programming period, Cohesion Fund resources in Slovakia are implemented through the Slovakia Programme, with at least 37% of the allocation required to go towards climate objectives. Recipients are most often state organisations, infrastructure managers, municipalities and water companies carrying out capital-intensive public projects.
