The Industrial Property Office of the Slovak Republic maintains registers of trademarks, patents, utility models, designs and designations of origin, and decides on their registration. For companies, it has two practical uses. The first is free searches in the public registers – before choosing a name, logo or product designation, it can be verified whether a similar right is not already registered, which can prevent a costly dispute as well as the need to rebuild an entire identity from scratch. The second is protection itself: registering a trademark, a packaging design or a technical solution gives a company the right to defend itself against imitation. The Office also provides information and advisory services, including help with navigating the classification of goods and services, which is decisive for an application.
