Grants for transport and cycling routes support sustainable mobility and safety in municipalities and regions. They fund cycling routes and cycle paths, including connections to stops and stations, bicycle racks and shelters, traffic-calming measures, pedestrian crossings, pavements, public transport stops, park-and-ride car parks and, in some schemes, public transport vehicles too. Applicants are municipalities, towns, regions and their organisations, and for linear structures, associations of municipalities are often involved. The main obstacle tends not to be money but the settlement of property rights over the land under the route, which for cycling routes running across dozens of parcels can take years. Preparation should therefore start with the land and permits, not with the design. Connectivity to the existing network is also assessed, not an isolated section.
