Grants for non-profit organisations include support for civic associations, non-profit organisations providing generally beneficial services, foundations and church-affiliated entities. The sources are more varied than for companies: besides programmes financed from EU funds and national grant schemes run by ministries, these include foundation and corporate grant programmes, international funds, local-government grants, the assignment of a share of paid tax, and donations. This very variety is the main source of risk – multi-source financing of a single project requires a rigorous separation of expenditure, so that the same cost is not reported twice. The second typical problem is financing operations: most grants cover projects, not the running of the organisation, so it pays to look for schemes that also recognise overhead costs in the form of a flat rate.
