Salary range in a job ad

The salary range in a job ad is the pay information that an employer must state when publishing a job vacancy. In Slovakia this is a legal obligation relating to the basic wage component, and the actual offer must not be lower than the published amount. Companies often reduce this figure to a minimum and cover the rest through a variable component, but this lowers response rates, because candidates compare precisely the published figures. It is better to state a realistic range with an explanation of what moves the wage within it – experience, a certificate, language skills, shift work. European regulation is, moreover, strengthening pay transparency, including the candidate's right to know the salary conditions before an interview, so this trend will continue to strengthen. Companies would therefore do well to compare their own ranges with the market before publishing them, since the gap between positions will become increasingly visible to existing employees as well.
