Collaboration with a university or research institution gives companies access to expert capacities and equipment they would not build themselves, and it also tends to score extra points in calls focused on innovation and research. In practice, it can take the form of a joint project, contract research, consultations, access to laboratories, or involving students in solving an assignment. Before starting, three things need to be settled in writing: who will own the results and the intellectual property, how publication will be handled, which matters to the academic side, and how the company's confidential data is protected. Differing pace and priorities on both sides are common, so it helps to set specific milestones and one responsible person on each side.
