An evaluation round is a time period after whose deadline the provider assesses all applications submitted up to that point. Open calls tend to be divided into several rounds with regular deadlines, for example monthly or quarterly, and they run until the allocation is exhausted or until a set date. This mechanism has a fundamental consequence for the applicant: submitting in an earlier round has a higher chance of success because the allocation is still available, whereas in later rounds only higher-quality projects may be approved, or the call may close in the meantime. The provider is obliged to announce the closure of the call in advance. It is therefore worth monitoring the remaining allocation, which is published on an ongoing basis. It is equally worth tracking the number of applications submitted in previous rounds, from which the pressure on the allocation can be estimated. Providers commonly publish this data.
