Product photography

Product photography is the main source of information in online shopping, because the customer has no way to inspect the goods in person. A proven set includes a main shot on a neutral background, views from all sides, a detail of the material and finish, a shot showing scale in relation to an everyday object, and the product in actual use. A consistent style across the catalogue looks more credible and makes comparison easier. Photographs must correspond to reality – embellished shots increase both returns and complaints. Technically, attention must be paid to optimising file size, as images are the most common cause of slow-loading product pages, and to adding alternative text, which helps both accessibility and search. When reshooting over time, it is worth noting down the lighting, distance and background settings so that new items look consistent with older ones. Investment in photography pays back fastest on best-selling products.
