A video budget is made up of four components: preparation and script, the shooting day with crew and equipment, post-production covering editing, graphics, subtitles and sound, and licences for music or archive footage. The price therefore ranges from hundreds of euros for a simple video shot in-house to tens of thousands for advertising production. Savings can be made by combining several videos into a single shooting day, which is the single most effective measure, as well as by using existing premises and limiting graphics. It is not worth saving on sound and on preparation, because poor sound ruins even well-shot footage, and a lack of preparation drives up the cost of editing. Where video needs are recurring, it is usually more economical to equip an in-house person than to commission production for every single piece.
