Grants for energy audits relate to an assessment of a business's energy consumption that identifies savings measures and quantifies their benefit and payback. In the context of grants, it plays a dual role. For large enterprises it tends to be mandatory under legislation at regular intervals. For everyone, it is also the basis without which an application for investment support for energy savings cannot be made – the audit is precisely what demonstrates the starting position and the expected saving, which is a measurable indicator of the project. The audit itself, or energy consulting, tends to be supported under smaller schemes and through advisory programmes, often under the minimal aid regime. The order of steps is therefore fixed: first the audit, then the application, and only then implementation of the measures. Doing it the other way round means ineligible expenditure.
